SURPRISE! THE VEHICLE REPAIR HISTORY MAY NOT BE AS CLEAN AS YOU THINK

Don’t assume that the used car history report the dealer provides to you accurately represents the car’s repair history. Those reports can be incomplete.

I recently forced a dealership to buyback my client’s defective car. The operation of the car was a complete mess starting from the day she purchased the car. The car experienced chronic check engine light illumination, misfires and stalls.

The used vehicle history report (Here) she was provided showed the vehicle had a long history of apparently routine service and maintenance. However, a deeper investigation by my office revealed a different story. The truth is the car had a chronic history of check engine light illumination and misfire complaints (Here) by the prior owner. Those complaints do not appear on the used vehicle history. Here is a short example:

10/31/11 – Vehicle was presented for a check engine light concern. 10/31/11 – History report only states the vehicle tire pressure, engine/powertrain computer/module were checked.
12/19/11 – Vehicle was presented for a check engine light concern. 12/19/11 – History report only states the vehicle had its tire condition and pressure checked.
2/17/12 – Vehicle was presented for a check engine light concern. 2/17/12 – History report only states the vehicle had an oil and filter change. Tire pressures were checked.
8/15/13 – My client presented the vehicle for a check engine light concern and lack of power. 8/15/13 – History report only states the vehicle tire condition and pressure were checked.

Ask the dealer questions about the history of a car before you buy it. If the selling dealer is the manufacturer’s dealership, then ask the dealer to provide you with a copy of the warranty repair history. Unfortunately, even then it is difficult to determine whether the dealership is being truthful.
